Why does GPTBot receive HTTP 429?
Instructions and recommendations from the exon.io team.
HTTP 429 means that GPTBot has exceeded the configured request rate limit. In most cases, this is caused by the global server-wide limit, which restricts the total amount of GPTBot traffic across all websites hosted on the server.
Current limits are:
- 30 requests per 10 seconds per domain
- 300 requests per 10 seconds server-wide
When the limit is exceeded, GPTBot is temporarily rate-limited and the server responds with HTTP 429 Too Many Requests. This usually does not mean that a specific website is blocking GPTBot; it is a server protection mechanism against excessive request rates.
